In this blog post I’ll explain why Traditional Christmas Colors- classic green, red and white- are still the best decor color schemes for the holiday but with a caveat – minimal red.
1. Traditional Christmas Colors Gives Us Nostalgia
While Christmas decor has come a long way and no colors are off limits for the holidays, keeping to a classic palette comes with some advantages including the feeling of a timeless and traditional Christmas – reminiscent of childhood homes and movies.
2. Traditional Colors Are The Best At Establishing Association with Children
If you have small children, I also find that incorporating these classic colors helps kids associate our home decor with other festive items they might be seeing around them during this time of year- which are usually red and green.
3. Minimal Red is Key
The reason the traditional Christmas colors often get a bad rap is because you are probably using too much red! The color red demands attention and having it all over your home for over a month can have a draining effect in our space. Think of how adding the color blue has a calming affect in the home – red does basically the opposite at least for me. So take a chill pill on all the red decor and rather add red to your space in subtle ways like in stockings, wrapping paper, font color on a sign, etc.
4. Shades of Green
Green and various shades of green can be both traditional and festive while also having a calming effect in the space. The trick is to use shades of green like sage or light green so that the traditional Crayola green of some decor pieces can be balanced. Using green plays well with the timeless greenery that we often see during this time of year. Its hard to go too green which makes it a perfect color for the base of your Christmas decorations.
5. Gold is also Traditional Christmas Color
Red and Green seem boring? Gold is a classic Christmas color that adds some pazz-azz aka sparkle! This time of year, gold acts as a neutral up against traditional Christmas decor – it provides a warmth reminiscent of that warm Christmas light or candle glow.
What color scheme are you planning on using this holiday season? Sticking to the timeless look or perhaps some trendy color schemes like the pink Christmas decor that has hit Instagram hard lately? As long as it sparks joy in your home go for it!
