How to Make a Scroll Sign

Create a large scale scroll sign to place on a large wall or mantle to create instant impact at a low cost. You will need the following supplies:

  • Brown Craft Paper
  • Pencil
  • Black Sharpie
  • Jute Yarn
  • Tape

Step 1: Find your Scroll Sign Inspiration

This can be something you already have in mind or perhaps a piece of decor that is out of budget. In this case, I was looking for a sign that read “Joy to the world. The Lord has come”. After doing a quick search I decided this wall sign was the perfect inspiration for my Christmas scroll sign.

Step 2: Sketch the Words and Art on the Craft Paper

Once you’ve chosen your design go ahead and lay out some regular notebook paper over your craft paper and sketch the design on the notebook paper in order to help you correctly scale the design so its not too small and also appropriately spaced out. Once you’re happy with that sketch, remove the notebook paper and use that as a guide to transfer your design in pencil to your craft paper. Play some music and get in the Christmas spirit!

Step 3: Fill in Scroll Sign with Sharpie

Next, fill in your design with a classic black sharpie. This process can take some time so I distributed it over a couple of nights to do this part while listening to some YouTube videos. I promise it will pay off in the end!

Step 4: Scroll It!

Now that you have created this Christmas masterpiece, roll up the ends (like a scroll) and use tape to keep the ends from unscrolling themselves. Now its time to insert your yarn into the top scroll. Add a paper clip to the end of the yarn so it falls right through and now you have a scroll sign you can easily hang anywhere!

Step 5: Hang up your Scroll Sign!

Now its time to show the world! I chose to take the string out of my scroll as I wanted to run this garland across the top instead. I used command strips to keep it secure on these decorative shutters.
