Halloween is quickly approaching and what has become my favorite way to get into the spirit is to decorate my kids room with spooky Halloween decor! Here are 10 fun and easy ideas to give your kid’s room a spooky (but not too spooky) Halloween touch of magic!
1. A kid-friendly Halloween decor theme
A kid-friendly theme could include pumpkins, cute ghosts and more. As long as the theme doesn’t seem creepy to you or your kids. Small kids might not be interested in the spookier motifs at this age so be careful with what items you choose to place in their room which is their safe space. In this space, all the ghosts and pumpkins have a happy face which gives them a cute, cheery vibe.
2. Halloween kids crafts as wall decor
Target and other big box stores usually carry tons of fun crafts for major holidays like Halloween. This felt wreath was q quick afternoon activity with involved pasting pieces onto the wreath with some sticky dots. It was fun for him to have a piece he created also serve as Halloween decor in his room.
3. Kids Halloween Bed Pillows
Festive throw pillows are a great way to make a large impact with minimal effort as pillows can be easily swapped. If possible, try to find Halloween/Fall pillows that have a zipper so you can reuse the insert during the rest of the year. The pillow cover can also be washed- which it will need to be if your kids played with it a little too much.
4. Halloween Garland
A felt garland is a great touch to a room. Felt is a great option because the material is soft, durable and light weight making it easier to place around a kids bedroom. One of my favorite places to place garland is over the bed frame – just make sure there is some contrast and that your pillows are the right height for this.
5. Halloween Kids Night Light that doubles as decor
Kids really enjoy toys and decor that lights up and looks cool in a darker space. These ceramic figurines served as my son’s nightlight for the fall season. The pumpkin had a steady light and the ghost slowly went through various light colors. Both are from Target. The ghost was actually supposed to be painted but my son didn’t want to paint it because it was white and ghosts are white so I couldn’t really debate his reasoning there. I tell this funny story because I try not to take the decor in his space too seriously and remember its all for my son’s enjoyment.
6. Showcase Kids Themed Painted Projects
During the holidays like Halloween we end up having tons of mini projects our kids painted from either Target or that they came home with from school. I love having a place to showcase these as part of the Halloween decor in my kids room so. They feel their art is being appreciated and its not laying around the living room because it has a dedicated place.
7. Kid-friendly Halloween Pumpkins
The most traditional and fun decor element during the fall season is faux pumpkins. In my kids room I make sure to use non-breakable light weight pumpkins. I particularly love the packs of mini pumpkins that have a color theme so you can create a cute little pumpkin patch look.
8. Kids Halloween Wall Sign
A wall sign or letter sign is a great way to bring a little magic into a space. I make sure to use command strips with these signs as they are temporary. I particularly love the seasonal collections of wall signs from Opal plus Olive. Their signs are made for kids spaces and are always on trend.
9. Halloween Book Shelf for Kids Bedroom or Playroom
A Halloween book shelf is not only a beautiful piece of decor, but also a fun way to incorporate seasonal educational books for kids to learn more about fall and Halloween. Just a fun trip to your local library is sure to provide tons of fun fall and Halloween books. Another place I love to find books is thrift stores as you an usually find books for a fraction of their original price and thrift stores tend to have many seasonal kids books for Halloween and Christmas.
10. Halloween Pajamas
While pajamas are not technically pieces of decor, I have made a tradition to give my son a new pair of Halloween pajamas when I decorate his room to officially start the Halloween season! The latest hit in my home are pajamas that glow in the dark like these from Amazon.
When to decorate for Halloween?
While we often break out our fall candles in September or August, I do not decorate my kids room for Halloween until October 1st. This way he can have an age appropriate countdown and understand that the month is October and the last day of October is Halloween! My son is young so that may vary based on your kids age. I’ve also seen many parents adopt a countdown calendar for Halloween similar to a Christmas advent calendar and think this is a great idea!
